Notes from the depths: Clam bleaching
Our Notes from the Depths will cover specific topics that come up in our everyday conversations with our customers. These notes are based on our opinions and experiences with a combined 80 years of experience and an environmental concern for the environment. Each system and animal is different so any advice here should be followed as a guide only when dealing with your own tank specs and adjusted accordingly.
One questions we hear a lot is from customers with clams that begin to bleach. Typically, clam bleaching is caused by too high temperatures or too much light.
On the light end, clams can usually adapt to light increases that occur over time so if you do purchase a new clam, keep in moderate light when you first acquire it then move to a high light area if that’s what you plan.
